Intent
Physical Education supports developing children’s knowledge, skills and understanding of how they can move with increasing competence and confidence in a range of physical activities along with promoting attitudes towards living a healthy lifestyle.
We understand and recognise the importance of Physical Education to a child’s physical, cognitive, social and emotional development as well as the role it can play in a child’s spiritual, moral and cultural development. We aim to provide a broad and balanced curriculum in order to achieve this.
Through a balance of individual, team, cooperative and competitive activities we aim to cater for all individual pupil’s needs and abilities. Along with the importance placed on PE lessons, we also have a wider curriculum offer which includes the opportunities for pupils to take part in extra-curricular sports and activity clubs. Daily physical activity also plays a crucial role in keeping our children active and healthy including active lessons, brain and movement breaks between sessions, break and lunch times.
Implementation
Expectations are developed from the use of the EYFS Framework and the National Curriculum for KS1 alongside the Jackfield Infant School progression of knowledge and skills document ensuring that prior knowledge is built upon as children move through the school.
Powerful Knowledge
Pupils within the EYFS undertake daily physical exercise to support their gross and fine motor movements through the continuous provision planned for them and in their outdoor areas where, they have access to use trim trails, wheeled toys (such as bikes, trikes and scooters), large construction kits and planned activities to increase their skills with items such as hoops, balls, nets and bean bags. Reception have access to a structured PE lesson each week to develop their fundamental movement skills and begin to engage in skills for engaging in different physical activities and sports. From the Spring term, Nursery begin structured lessons to develop their fundamental movement skills and begin to complete cooperative and team activities within these.
In KS1 two structured hour-long PE lessons are provided weekly. With the curriculum focusing on developing and refining pupils’ fundamental movement skills in a variety of contexts and develops the early stages of tactical awareness and physical fitness elements of agility, balance and coordination. Curriculum content includes gymnastics, dance, athletics and games and the skills needed within in these to begin to perform and begin to take part in team games.
Literacy
Pupils are taught to understand and use subject-specific vocabulary during PE lessons outlined in the progression of knowledge and skills document for PE.
Excellence for All
We aim to include 30 minutes of physical activity throughout the school day in addition to our PE lessons. We aim to make some lessons active, and children are encouraged to take part in ‘brain breaks’ through our exercise time initiative such as Kidz Bop Dances, Mindfulness and Go Noodle activities throughout the day. Our playground provides all children with different ways to keep active during lunch and break times with the use of our trim trail, climbing frame, traverse wall, exercise equipment, The Meadow and other activities such as role play and board games in our Stage and Peace at Last areas. Additionally, after school clubs are offered to pupils covering a range of traditional sports and alternative sports throughout the year.
Wider World
We aim to support our children to develop positive attitudes towards physical activity whilst in school that they can transfer these into the wider world around them, where they can continue to remain active and maintain a healthy lifestyle. This could include children joining sports and activity clubs in their local community and finding ways to stay active at home.
Impact
Our Physical Education curriculum is high quality and carefully constructed to build upon prior knowledge, so children can remember and learn more. Our pupils enjoy learning about the world and develop the skills and knowledge relevant to becoming a healthy and active individual.
We measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:
• Pupil discussions about their learning demonstrate what they remember
• Tracking skill development through PE assessment tool.
