Relational Approach in Education
The relational approach places emphasis on relationships, respect, responsibility and restoration.
Relational approaches value the essential nature of relationships in enabling individuals to develop, learn, adapt and thrive. Relational practice impacts and develops all levels of a school setting, including ethos, policy, procedures and everyday interactions. These approaches allow schools to adapt to the emotional and developmental needs of all young people.
Importance is placed on making connections, being positive, developing safe relationships, provide emotional, social and academic outcomes.
The practice is based upon trust. There needs to be a strong sense of belonging and connection. Children are taught about their emotions, how to manage then and how to regulate them. By learning about their own emotions children are able to have a greater awareness and look from the perspective of others. Through restorative practice conflicts are resolved, and repair and restoring relationships become effective.
