Art
Expressing ideas and feelings through different forms- painting, drawing, collage, sculpture.
Intent
At Jackfield, every child is an artist. Art is an integral part to the children’s entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum. Pupils are given the skills, knowledge and opportunities to express their ideas and feelings through different forms. We intend for the high-quality teaching of Art to inspire, engage and challenge pupils, whilst giving them the confidence to experiment with and develop their own creativity.
Implementation
The delivery of Art takes on a variety of approaches suitable to the concept, theme or the children being taught. The interests of the children inspire the planning of termly topics, typically done through pupil voice. Expectations are developed from use of the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework and the National Curriculum for KS1 alongside the Jackfield Infant School progression of knowledge and skills document, ensuring that all key elements of the subject are covered and we build upon our prior learning.
Powerful Knowledge
The teaching of art skills and concepts is carefully sequenced to develop prior knowledge and learning. The progression of skills document is used by teachers to support this. Knowledge organisers with art concepts support a schema approach to build on prior knowledge and committing knowledge to the long-term memory.
Excellence for all
Cross-curricular links between Art and topics are promoted to allow all children to deepen their understanding across the curriculum. The annual ‘Display Day’ event showcases and celebrates the achievements of all pupils based on a book, topic or theme. Scaffolding, questioning and are specifically planned and used to support children with SEND.
Literacy
The pupils are taught to use basic subject-specific vocabulary. The children are introduced to a range of works, and develop knowledge of the styles and vocabulary used by famous artists. Children use their oracy skills to communicate what they see, feel and think through the use of colour, texture, form, pattern and different materials and processes. The children are also taught to be evaluative, clearly and respectfully articulating their opinions of their own work, that of artists and that of their peers. Art enhances the teaching of literacy, supporting talk for writing. Non-fiction texts are used when appropriate to support the powerful knowledge that is gained. This may be through topic texts or guided reading sessions.
Wider world
The children carefully observe, comment and appreciate the world around them through Art. The local area and the wider world are used as inspiration, to learn from other cultures and to respect diversity.
Impact
Our Art and Design curriculum is high quality and carefully constructed to build upon prior knowledge and skills, so children can remember and learn more. Our pupils enjoy learning about the world and develop the skills and knowledge relevant to becoming artists.
We measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:
• Pre and post learning quizzes based upon our knowledge organisers are used to support effective learning
through recall
• Pupil discussions about their learning demonstrate what they remember
• Pupils develop a greater understanding of the world around them.
